History of the Friedländer-Schule

Friedlaender-School was founded in 1990 during the fall of the Berlin wall when East and West Berlin were reunited.
The faculty "German as a Foreign Language" of Humboldt- Universitiy was then closed and its staff lost their jobs.
Veronika Schmidt, former professor, then founded Friedlaender-School. She not only created jobs for her former colleagues but also saved and increased their experiences with students of the late Soviet-Union, eastern Europe and Indochina.

Friedlaender-School was the first private school in East-Berlin.

In the 1990ies most of the students of Friedlaender-School were Jewish refugees or repatriates from eastern Europe or the countries of the former Soviet-Union, amongst them many artists. Friedlaender-School helped them to improve their German and to settle down in Germany.

With the foundation of the Friedlaender-School Veronika Schmidt contineud the tradition of the Berlin Jewish intellectuals prior to 1933 who have enriched the culture and social live of the city, the sciences and arts by international exchange.
